Have
you ever wondered how the science you learnt in school can be
applied in your daily life? How
interested is the average person in matters related to
science? Do you remember what is Newton’s First law of
motion? Even if you do, can you think of an example in your
daily life that best illustrates this law?
For most of us Science and Mathematics have simply been
subjects we had to study in school and forget about soon
after. Even those of us who went ahead and studied engineering
and medicine, we rarely apply or connect science in our
day-to-day lives.
In an attempt to make science more exciting for the layman,
the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and Vigyan
Prasar have tied up with UTV to produce a quiz show, Chamatkar.
This innovative series aims to introduce Science in a
non-intimidating and fun way to the common man. Chamatkar
seeks an audience in the average adult by basing the quiz on
everyday science. The idea is to understand science all over
again and still believe it can be very exciting and
interesting.
Chamatkar
is anchored by Sachin Khedekar; well-known theater, TV and
film actor. Sachin is an environmental engineer by training,
but has been an actor for the last 20 years. He first love
remains theater, but he has acted in TV serials such as
Imtihaan and Sailaab,
and films such as Bose…A Forgotten Hero.
Unlike
most other quiz shows, where complicated questions and answers
are asked with little explanations, Chamatkar aims at
explaining out the basics of science to the layman who is
curious about things around him. Principles of science are
illustrated with experiments performed on set by Sachin
Khedekar, a touch of humor is added with the introduction of
Professor Gadbadkar, the absent-minded professor. Questions
are related to things that we see around us on a daily basis
– how grandfather clocks work, to cooking, to creatures
around us, allowing participants and viewers to see science in
every part of their lives and understand how everything works.
