Jigyasa (Kartavya)v3101031National science day is celebrated in India on 28 February each year to mark the discovery of the Raman Effect by Indian physicist Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman on 28 February 1928. Like every year this year also we celebrated national science day with great enthusiasm. We celebrated it from 28th feb to 09 march at Kartavya Chapter Centre-1 Naglapadi. The function started with lighting of diyas and remembering god. After the spiritual celebration our honorable chief guest Dr. Sanjeev Kumar sir (Expert of Fuzzy logic) talked about the importance of science in our life and its basic uses. Mr. Himanshu Srivastava Coordinater of Jigyasa Kartavya gave us a welcome speech. As the program proceeded Mr. Ashish Nishad gave us the workshop on magic of science, Engg. project. Mr. Abhidhanya Singh co-coordinater of Kartavya gave us a speech on Science Day and Raman Effect. Mr. Avnish Kumar delivered a speech on Vedic mathematics and the program proceeded many young students shared their innovative and science projects. There was a session of speech, essay writing, poster painting in which many students participated. At the last of the event a short session was conducted on embedded system and fuzz logy used in robotics by Kushagra kuashik. PHOENIX SCIENCE CLUBV2503007NEW HOMES FOR BIRDS – A RENOVATION OF IDEAS In the past, people lived in harmony with Nature. Birds had a place in the everyday lives of humans. Students of PHOENIX SCIENCE CLUB promoted new homes for sparrows and other birds during the National Science Day and Environment Month Celebration 2014. Sparrows(one of the endangered species in Puducherry), crows and other birds swoop down on the terrace of our houses to quench their thirst. Recently, many trees being cut or destroyed in natural calamities , the sparrows and other little birds have no place to go. So we decided to set up bird feeder for sparrows inside residential houses and in our areas. In this view, I Mr. D.Aravindaraja, Secretary worked on a one week training session on “How to make a Bird Feeder” along with the members. The next week, I conducted a “Bird Feeder Contest” in our area along with other executive members. With a little effort we could tempt birds back into our urban lives. Our club member students set up a bird feeder to find out the birds that visit our homes and the result obtained is given below: BIRDS NO.OF VISITS (PROTECTED) NO.OF VISITS (UNPROTECTED) CROW 1 7 SPARROW 12 1 BLACK DRANGO 8 2 PURPLE SUNBIRD 10 2 We believe that these bird feeders are the way to nurture birds in an urban setting. It is not a difficult task for us. We leave them undisturbed, place a bowl of water and a bird feeder near it and the birds will automatically come. The student members re-use the waste pet bottles from their homes to make the bird feeders. Different types and shapes of bird feeders are designed by student members along with their Club Secretary - Teacher Mr.D.Aravindaraja to suit different birds. A total of 125 bird feeders have been made distributed them to encourage people to buy bird feeders which would create awareness among the public to save biodiversity. It is not very difficult to get back. Allot few places in our homes by leaving a hole in the top wall of our houses. It won’t kill aesthetics; it will increase a family of sparrows or other birds to stay there.

SparrowV2933002AIM One of the most important natural resources without which man cannot survive is water. It should be eternal source. For fostering the valuable natural resource especially water for our future generation is in our hand. Eventhough 97% of water is available on the surface of earth, only 0.02% is readily available for drinking purpose. So we have to minimize our usage, but unfortunately due to unawareness people’s in many region wasting drinking water to wash, clean utensils, even to wash their cars with a hose. But if we continue it definitely within the year 2050 or 2070 there will not be even a single drop of water to drink. Hence PEM SCHOOL OF EXCELLENCE has decided to work on “RECYCLING OF GREY WATER”. SCIENTIFIC PRINCIPLE 3R principle (Reduce- Recycle -Reuse) through the principle osmosis- double filtration - bio-degrading - carbon filtration. MATERIALS USED Netlon, pebbles, sand, vetiveria zizanioides, canna indica and charcoal PROCESS Netlon, filters solid particles dissolved in grey water  Pebble filters dirt  Sand filters oil residues  Charcoal filters impurities remains and in conditioning water  Vetiveria zizanioides andCanna indica helps in bio-degradation of micro organisms present in grey water. APPROXIMATE COST INCURRED - Rs.8700/- UTILITY OF THIS PROJECT The school well is a good resource for the past five years . Forseeing the need for water for future , to maintain the level of ground water(already rain water harvest is implemented) for years to come and to reduce the usage of ground water for gardening, grass lawns and our school children’s ‘Herbal Garden’ purpose we decided to recycle grey water. This is yet another education to students to go “BEYOND BOOKS”on water management. This will be an eye-opener to students and inturn it will reach the parents as an awareness on the necessity to preserve, conserve water for future INDIA. A BRIEF SURVEY OF THIS PROJECT Every day approximately out of 16,000 litres spent inside the rest room of the school campus half of this amount falls into the grey water storage tank. With the recycling process from here about 6000 litres of water is used for the children’s ‘Herbal Garden’ and the front lawn alone. Students themselves were shockingly surprised to know of this fact. This paved a way for further lesson on waste water management. Students of PEM School are uniquely identified wherever they may be in seeing them using water economically and they have the courage to tell others of the benefit of SAVE WATER.

Ms. Anita GargV0901126 World Hepatitis Day, observed on July 28 every year, aims to raise global awareness of hepatitis B and hepatitis C and encourage prevention, diagnosis and treatment. One of only four disease awareness days recognised by the World Health Organization (WHO), it is co-ordinated by the WHO and the World Hepatitis Alliance. Approximately 500 million people worldwide are living with either hepatitis B or hepatitis C.If left untreated and unmanaged, hepatitis B or C can lead to advanced liver scarring (cirrhosis) and other complications, including liver cancer or liver failure. While many people worry more about contracting AIDS than hepatitis, the reality is that every year 1.5 million people worldwide die from either hepatitis B or C faster than they would from HIV/AIDS. Hepatitis groups, patients and advocates worldwide take part in events on 28 July to mark the occasion.

Ms. Anita GargV0901126Description: “Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's needs, but not every man's greed.” ― Mahatma Gandhi Water is our most precious resource. Doing everything in our power to prevent water waste helps to conserve this vital resource while saving money. Two main sources of water waste are leaks and the over-watering of lawns and gardens. For many properties, the first suspicion of a leak occurs when high water consumption is noticed on the water bill. Always water bill should be checked for abnormal consumption. In this regard, a small research was carried out in Rukmini Devi Public School with some of the VI class students, in which they were required to find out leaking taps, if any, in the school premises. Children were divided into three groups for this activity. From the entire school premises, 16 taps were found leaking by the students. After this, students were explained how to use a measuring cylinder and how to take readings from it. After this, a small measuring cylinder was used to measure the amount of water leaking from one tap for 1 minute. It was found that 1 ml water was leaking from that tap per minute. This showed, that in a year, 525.6 litres of water will go waste from that one tap, if it is not fixed. After this, plumber of the school was contacted by the students and the concerned staff. He was updated on the number of leaking taps on each floor. He took two days to fix the runny faucets. This activity, in all took 10 days for completion, wherein students had maintained small notebooks to keep their numerical data updated. This activity was an eye opener for the students, where they realized that each and every drop of water is precious for us, and we should not let it go waste. Students themselves came up with water conservation tips and ideas, after this activity so that they play their role well in water conservation at ground level; both at a home and in school. This activity, hence, was an enriching experience for the students, giving them a practical approach towards problem identification as well as problem solving. The hands – on activities were enjoyed by the students.
Ms. Anita GargV0901126“Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's needs, but not every man's greed.” ― Mahatma Gandhi Water conservation encompasses the policies, strategies and activities to manage fresh water as a sustainable resource to protect the water environment and to meet current and future human demand. Population, household size and growth and affluence all affect how much water is used. In order to sensitize the students regarding water conservation, a powerpoint presentation was shown to the students. The powerpont presentation contained various water conservation techniques which the students can apply practically in their day – to – day lives. The session was started with a discussion on importance of water and the urgent need to conserve and save water. The discussion touched upon the daily usage of water in domestic purposes; this was mainly done to make the students realize about our heavy dependence on water. Easy water saving tips were shared with the students, so as to acquaint them with the fact that these techniques and methodologies can be applied at home and in schools, and it is all of us together who can bring about a change. Sessions like these help students learn about responsibilities, develop required skills and competencies necessary to accomplish goals and purposes, and grow personally and socially to prepare them for advancement in the society. Stress was laid upon changing basic habits at home and in school which can lead to a big change; like turning off the faucet while brushing teeth, washing laundry with full load in the washing machine, getting the leaks repaired, taking shorter showers, etc. These tips motivated the students to give valuable inputs to the discussion and thus, make it a daily routine to carry these on in their vicinity. Also, the students were encouraged to sensitize their family members and friends further so that the water conservation chain continues, and brings about the desired change. It was concluded in the end that Water Conservation is about more than buying new gadgets…..It’s about changing our habits. These habits should change for sustainable development, which benefits the present generation as well as the generations to come.
Ms. Anita GargV0901126“Each Droplet Counts” Water is very important source because without water there is no life on earth. Water is a substance which covers ¾ part of the world. It means water is occupying more portion compared to land. But this water is becoming more polluted because of the environmental changes. It is necessary to conserve the water. It is the duty of every human being to save water. So, to make the students understand the importance of water, a skit was presented on stage about “Conserving Rain Water”. The method in which rain water can be saved was shown followed by its various uses like cleaning, washing, etc. It depicted the message of saving Earth by saving water to make Earth a better place to live in. Students were also made aware about the various measures they can take to conserve water i.e. while brushing turn off taps, use bucket instead of shower, close the taps properly after use, etc. It was an appreciable effort on the part of the students. They were guided to use the water wisely and care for it properly.
Ms. Anita GargV0901126 “Don’t let the water run in the sink, our life’s on the brink!.” Water is one of the natures precious gift to mankind. In order to sensitize the students regarding water conservation , poem recitation was done by class III students. The poem emphasized on various water conservation techniques which the students can apply practically in their day – to – day lives. Water being one of the most essential necessity of life, becoming an increasing scare resource, needs careful planning and management. Availability of safe quality drinking water is being reduced due to pollution from sewage and industrial waste. So water should be meticulously harnessed and carefully conserved. It should be economically used and safely disposed off after usage.
Ms. Anita GargV0901126 “We forget that the water cycle and the life cycle are one.” As part of Social Responsibility initiative to save environment (Water Conservation), students of class VI of Rukmini Devi Public School made rain gauge to create awareness about the importance of rain in the earth’s water cycle. Students were informed well in advance about the activity. They were told to bring the required material from their homes. All the steps required to make rain gauge was enumerated to students. Each student participated in the activity with lot of zeal and enthusiasm. The students were made aware that rain gauge is an instrument that is used to collect and measure falling water (precipitation). It measures the depth of water that would cover the ground if the rain did not drain away or evaporate. Also a small discussion on the effects of water conservation practices as it relates to information gathered by rain gauges. After making the rain gauge the students worked on the equipment and tried to measure the amount of rainfall using their rain gauges. "Water is something that’s going to get more and more expensive- It’s not just the cost of water, it’s just the environmental impact."

VIVEKANANDA SCIENCE CLUB, RENGALI HIGH SCHOOLV2402038The inhabitants of Agalpur G.P. are facing hardship to meet the basic requirements for drinking and other needs. Hence an attempt has been taken to assess the Water foot print as well as Eco foot-print of the locality. The activities were conceived and implemented through a process of participatory learning and action involving 25 nos. of students. Methodology like preparation of map of surveyed area and water budget, assessment of quality and quantity of freshwater available from diff. sources. The study team performed a rapid investigation and collected valuable data(s) such as water budget, extent of usable water, soil texture, porosity & permeability, evaporation and average consumption demand liter/per/capita/day. The analysis of data shows that the extent of fresh water is low in relation to demand of consumption by people and such deficit may be attributed to depletion of ground water. Factors affecting the depletion of water table were detected. Lists of suggestive techniques/schemes were recommended for recharging of ground water keeping in view of local resources to get rid of water crisis. On the eve of international year of water co-operation-2013 a series of awareness activities materialized by the eco-club. By such activities club team tried to boost awareness among the common mass. They learnt the art of water audit through which they have got an insight of water use pattern and to design water conservation measure. Water the elixir of life, should be used carefully every time everywhere by everyone. Follow up activities of this project will be to encourage the people of the locality to maintain Water budget and Water diary. It is hoped that this project will be of great value to those who are involved in optimizing water use on sustainable basis.

Blackbody Science GroupV1522004Transits of planets across the disk of the Sun are among the most fascinating phenomena in the Solar System astronomy. As seen from the Earth, transits of only Mercury and Venus are possible. These have held great importance in early telescopic astronomy when the transits enabled astronomers to determine, using triangulation, the solar parallax with an unprecedented accuracy and size up the Solar System. We arrange the telescope and solar glasses to watch the Transit. Unfortunately Mother Nature didn’t allow to see the Transit. We try to see it from 5:30AM. We arrange this event in Mysore Sankerana Stadium Vijayanagara behind the vidyavardhaka college. Despite of the weather condition we didn’t see the Transit, we showed the by using simple Mathematics calculate next Transit and conjunction of Venus with respect to the Earth with attended public and students.
