POPULAR SCIENCE WRITING IN ASSAMESE

Popular science books in Assamese encompassing a wide range of regional, national and international issues would be published by Vigyan Prasar in thenext couple of years, besides starting a feature service for use by prominent newspapers of Assam very soon. These were some of the recommendations drawn up during the two-day (27-28 March 2000) workshop on "Popular Science Writing in Assamese" held at Dibrugarh University under the auspices of Vigyan Prasar and Dibrugarh University, Assam.

Popular Science movement has undergone sea changes after traveling through a tortuous path spanning about half a century. Assam never lagged behind. Institutions and individuals working in the state have adopted all availablemodes and media for propagating science. One of the premier science popularizing organizations in the country Asom Bigyan Samity with its monthly magazine Bigyan Jeuti has spearheaded the efforts in the entire region to generate interest in science & technology. The entire northeast participated actively in all national events of consequence like BJVJ(1987), BJGVJ(1982), Total Solar Eclipses of 1995 and 1999, and other programmes initiated by NCSTC and Vigyan Prasar. To boost up momentum and intervene meaningfully in areas which deserve a better deal, Vigyan Prasar invited prominent science writers of Assam to the workshop to assess the status of popular science writing in print & electronic media and plan for the future.

The honourable Vice-Chancellor of Dibrugarh University Dr. Devdas Kakati formally declared the workshop open at the inaugural function held on 27 March at 10 am in the Aniruddha Dev Bhavan. In his speech Dr. Kakati enumerated a number of aspects demanding quick actions to mould the society in a desired manner. The coordinator of the event Prof. Paramananda Mahanta welcomed the guests and delegates, while Shri Arup K. Misra, Fellow of Vigyan Prasar, introduced VP and its activities. Dr. Subodh Mahanti of Vigyan Prasar explained the rationale of organizing such workshops and briefed about the desired outcome. Prof. Jyoti Prasad Medhi, Professor Emeritus of Gauhati University, lauded the efforts of VP in his brief address to the gathering. The session was presided over by Dr. J.C. Mahanta, Director of the Indian Council of Medical Research (Northeast chapter). The presence of the faculty, staff and students of the university, and a host of leading citizens from Dibrugarh including Shri Harihar Das, ex-Chairman of Assam Branch of the Indian Tea Association; Shri Binay Dowerah, retd. GM of Indian Oil Corporation; Prof. Sunil Barthakur, a noted educationist; Shri Manoj Jalan of Jalan Industries, Prof. Dhiren Barua from the tea sector lent weight to the function. The technical sessions, three in number, were arranged in such a way that the past and present of popular science writing in Assamese were adequately brought out in a systematic and chronological way. Maximum possible topics were covered during these sessions through brief paper presentations by the experts interspersed with enough discussion and queries. The lively presentations did not restrict to only written form of communication. As expected, they went far ahead to touch other means of communication like folk forms, drama & theatre, village discussions, puppetry, etc. Many burning problems faced by writers & readers, publishers & distributors were raised by the experts. Need for proper survey of readers' tastes, content analysis of the newspapers and magazines, standardizing terminology used, discrimination in writing for various age and sex groups, maintaining correlation between the published literature and needs of the society dominated the proceedings of the workshop. The experts who contributed technical papers in these sessions were : Shri Kalyan Bhuyan, Dr. Jayanti Chutia, Dr. Dimbeswar Chaliha, Dr. Ratan .K. Kataki, Dr. ( Mrs.) Niru Dutta, Dr. L.P.
