Dr Satish Mishra, CSIR-CDRI

The Orations & Awards Committee of the National Academy of Medical Sciences (India), selected Dr Satish Mishra, Principal Scientist, Division of Molecular Parasitology and Immunology, CSIR-Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI), Lucknow for “Dr. Tulsi Das Chugh Award” for the year 2020.

He has been awarded in recognition of his research work on Malaria parasite's life cycle which is a complex process involving two hosts and three invasive stages. Invasion in both mammals and mosquitoes requires a coordinated sequence of events to be played out successfully. The malaria parasites enter that person's bloodstream and travel to the liver. When the parasites mature, they leave the liver and infect red blood cells (RBCs). When the mature pathogen enters the red blood cells, they multiply and ultimately damage the RBCs. They burst out of the RBCs and enter the nearby cells and infect them. If only the multiplication can be stopped in the red blood cells, the infection can be controlled. His work is focused on a specific protein that is essential for the multiplication of malaria parasite in RBCs.

He has been awarded in recognition of his research work on Malaria parasite's life cycle which is a complex process involving two hosts and three invasive stages.

Dr Satish Mishra was also elected as a member of National Academy of Medical Sciences in 2018 and 2019. He is the recipient of Shakuntala Amir Chand Prize in 2018 by Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). He received Rmalingaswami re-entry Fellowship in 2013 by the Department of Biotechnology.

Dr. Tulsi Das Chugh Award carries a scroll, a Commemorative medal and cash incentive. The award will be given to him at the time of annual conference of the academy.
